猫の祖先であるリビアヤマネコは、
小鳥やネズミなどの小動物を捕食していました。
小動物個々のカロリーは非常に低いため、
一日に10～20頭程度を捕まえて食べていたようです。
つまりは、一度に大量にカロリーを摂取していたわけではなく、
一日にちょっとずつ食事をしてこまめにカロリーを摂取していたと言えます。
これは当然ながら現代の猫にも当てはまるので、
猫の食性を考えると、食事は数回に分けて
与えるほうが適切と考えるのが妥当でしょう。
また、猫の胃は小さいためまとめ食いには適しません。
僕が飼っている猫がそうなんですが、
一度にたくさん食べてしまうと、
ウエッて吐き出すことがあります。
他の飼い主さんもそういう経験があるのではないでしょうか。
猫の祖先の食性、猫の身体の仕組みから考えても
やはりちょこちょこ食いが猫には合っているわけです。
理由②：肥満を避けるため
一度にたくさん食べたり、空腹の時間が長く続いた状態で食事したりした場合、
血糖値が急激に上昇し、インスリンが大量に分泌されます。
その結果、余分な糖は脂肪に変えて蓄積されるため、
それを繰り返していくと肥満の原因となります。
肥満はあらゆる疾病の元となるので、
肥満を避けるためにもちょこちょこ食いが推奨されるわけです。
